Launch of Ballyhaunis Tidy Town’s Biodiversity Action Plan
Ballyhaunis Tidy Towns had a lovely time celebrating World Water Day on March 22nd and welcoming the arrival of Spring by launching our Community Biodiversity Action Plan at the Community Hall.
We were delighted to have Dr. Mary Tubridy from Dublin join us, as well as her associates. They shared valuable insights into the local plant and bird life, as well as the freshwater species in our area, and explained how the action plan came together through collaboration.
The event drew a good crowd from the local community eager to learn more about our environment and how we can protect it. Families and children were also welcomed with activities and refreshments.
Representatives from Mayo County Council's Climate Action division and the Local Authority Waters Programme were also present, sharing information on upcoming plans and initiatives. Laura Dixon and Deirdre Cunningham introduced the upcoming Mayo County Council’s Biodiversity Strategy and Climate Action Plan, while catchment scientist Peter Mitchell and Engagement officer Eanna Hyland introduced our river monitoring and citizen science programme. Their continued support has enabled us to form the first Citizen Science group in county Mayo, composed of volunteers dedicated to monitor the Dalgan quarterly, and raise awareness in the community and schools about the importance of caring for water.
In the spirit of Tree Week, 100 native trees were generously donated by the Tree Council of Ireland and distributed by the Ballyhaunis Community Council to residents, to be planted in local gardens and the Friary Park.
With our biodiversity plan now launched, we're hoping to inspire everyone in our community to take better care of our environment and join our continued efforts to create and protect habitats, and monitor water quality. Our focus for 2024 includes raising awareness and engagement through various community events planned for Biodiversity and Heritage week.
